Our Deeds Chapters are the starting point for turning ideas into action. With 17 student groups in colleges and high schools across the state, we are mobilizing the next generation of “filibusterers” to make change in their communities and disrupt the “powers that be.”
Our #Changemakers determine their own agenda, based on issues of importance to them. Through our training and guidance, they are provided meaningful, hands-on, legislative advocacy experiences using personal storytelling and other tactics to effectively influence progressive change in Texas.
To date, our #Changemakers have championed the passage of 7 bills in the Texas legislature and helped in the adoption of a paid sick ordinance at the local level.

Each year, our #Changemakers take on an advocacy project that they work on over the course of the academic year. The project must align with the Deeds’ vision of advancing gender equity and/or issues that intersect with gender equity, on their campus, at the city, county, or state-level. Their ideas have ranged from stocking campus restrooms with menstrual products, to re-writing the laws that govern response to campus sexual assault, to building their own voter engagement and turn-out teams. Using our #Changemakers Tool-Kit, they can find a list of questions to help organize their thoughts on how to approach their project. It’s an opportunity for them to answer some essential questions:
- What change do you wish to see in your community?
- How do you propose to make this change?
- Who will you need to engage to support your proposed changes?
- What tools or skills will you need to make this change?
- What is your timeline for goals?
- What support from #TeamDeeds do you need?
- How will you know you’ve been successful?
#TeamDeeds reviews the proposal and provides feedback and essential advocacy training and guidance to ensure that their Capstone Project is a successful learning experience.

In addition to in-person trainings and mentorship, we also provide our student chapters with an online organizing toolkit to help them make the biggest impact.
Split into 3 easy sections, the #Changemakers Tool-Kit provides our young advocates with resources on how to start their Deeds campus chapter, get it running, and a variety of templates that help them amplify their efforts.
Since this is a living toolkit — they have an opportunity to share ideas or best practices for their sister chapters at other schools to know about.
